6 Ways To Succeed As A New Leader

‘I recently got a promotion to a leadership position something I had been aspiring for many years.  That seemed to be the epitome of my success but when I am alone in their new office; I often feel the weight of the role. This is because of a backlog of work that needs to be delivered on time and I feel I have failed as a new leader because I have not been meeting the deadlines.  I have received a lot of advice from my supervisors; friends and I don’t know where to start. I have been advised to enroll in Leadership and Management Training but I would like to know how I can succeed as a new leader and if the course will help me achieve my goals.’

This was an email I received from Jane who was interested in joining the leadership and management training.

Here are 6 tips I gave her to succeed as a new leader.

1. Learn To Delegate.

The biggest challenge that most new leaders experience is understanding that they may not complete all the tasks alone and they end up getting overwhelmed.

Delegating duties not only helps you complete tasks on time but also builds trust with your team members.

For instance, Jane struggled with delegating and she ended up not being productive because she wouldn’t accomplish all tasks on time and this frustrated her.

2. Avoid Power Trips

As a leader, it is not good to let the power, ego, and status get the better of you. Rather than that, it is important to work on bringing transformation and do what is right to enable you and your team to achieve the set goals.

3. Learn and Learn

Learning is something that doesn’t end. Great leaders understand that for them to succeed, they need to continue learning.

Self-development is a lifelong journey and for you to be successful as a leader, it is important to learn and adapt to the new changes. Learn from other leaders who have succeeded in their roles and learn from their mistakes.

For example, Jane understood that for her to succeed as a leader, it was important for her to develop her leadership skills by enrolling in Leadership and Management Training.

4. Trust Your New Team

Trusting your team is the base of success. Have confidence in the team and give them a chance to align themselves with the goals that you want to achieve.

Involve the team in decision-making by communicating effectively, giving feedback and allowing them to give their opinions.

5. Understand That It’s Not About You, It’s About Your Team

To succeed as a new leader, it is not about your efforts, your achievements, or your goals. It is about recognizing the efforts of team members, and their contributions, then rewarding them for their achievements and this motivates them to even do better.

6. Listen To Your Team

Some people believe that the notion “the boss is always right” is good. This is not right because as a new leader, there are a lot of things you need to learn and adapt to.

Your team can help you in pursuit of your greatness and that’s why it’s vital to listen to them and value their input. Encourage your team members to be vocal about their values and trust them to do the right thing.

Conclusion

Being a new leader is a challenge but don’t make it worse by failing to adopt the above tips. Find the right approach for you to adopt best practices as a new leader and create a leadership style where respect prevails and this will enable you to succeed in your new role.
