5 Must-Have Skills To Be An Effective Trainer

‘I am planning to quit my job and be a full-time trainer from next year. I have been training employees in our company and it is something I am passionate about. I recently talked to one of the lead trainers in Nairobi and he told me that to be an effective trainer, it is important to develop my skills through a training of trainers program.  I was challenged and I would like to understand more about the skills essential for me to be an effective trainer and if the training of trainers training will help me develop those skills.’ Says Grace.

If you want to be an effective trainer it is important to develop your training skills, take time to practice, and develop qualities that will hone your professional competencies.

Many people think that training is about understanding the subject and communicating it but it is important to have relevant skills to be able to transfer knowledge to the audience.

So, if you want to be an effective trainer, here are five must-have skills.

1. Communication Skills

Every training session requires effective communication because the trainers need to deliver a message clearly and get a response from the audience.

With effective communication skills, a trainer can explain the concepts in a way that the audience understands and implement what they have learned.

2. Organizational Skills

As a trainer, it is important to organize the materials essential during the training. It is also important to plan the content and deliver it based on the time given.

Well-organized materials that focus on the topic relevant to the audience prevents you from wandering off.

3. Enthusiasm For Lifelong Learning

Trainers need to learn and develop skills to keep up with the advancements in the industry that keeps changing.

You can learn by reading books, watching videos related to training, or enrolling in the training of trainer’s course.

4. Adaptability Skills

Sometimes, the unexpected may occur leading to delay, or unforeseen circumstances and this requires the trainer to be adaptable. It is important to have another plan to save the situation when another plan fails.

I remember when I was inducting a group of interns, the projector went off and I wasn’t able to continue with the PowerPoint presentation. With the hardcopies that I had as backup, I managed to continue with the training.

5. Advanced Research Skills

For a training to be successful, the trainers should consider understanding the audience, researching the content, and the best method to deliver it.

Most of the information is available on the internet and with advanced research skills, you will find useful content.

Finally,

If you want your audience to walk out after the training with a memorable experience, it is important to keep it simple and engage them. For you to deliver effective training, consider refreshing your skills by learning.
