An accomplice of mine is a well-established HR professional with extensive experience in the field. I admire her mastery of the skill and efficiency. After working with her for some time, I asked how her career journey had been like and to my surprise, she began her HR career by default coming from a finance background. She landed an attachment at G4S which involved arranging files and never looked back from that point. Her dynamic career growth really inspired me and I’d like to share a number of tips I borrowed that will help accelerate your career progression.
Take a good look at yourself and evaluate your willingness to take up new challenges. Is it high or low? In order to experience career growth, you must awake from the coasting zone and become daring. Be willing to take up new challenges at work, and if opportunity is not availed to you, ask. My accomplice continued to explain how she was inquisitive through her journey up and as a result, she has learnt a lot. If you start challenging yourself, you will start learning new things adding to your skillset. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, if anything, others have made similar ones before.
I ones heard my employer say that the higher you grow in your career, the more soft skills you need. It is not always the person with more education experience that gets the promotion. That said, it is important that you equip yourself with relevant soft skills that will be of great benefit to your career for instance effective supervisory skills, conflict management, people management skills and so on. This way, when opportunity comes, you’ll be ready. Put in mind, career progression is a journey and you must start by preparing for the next level.
Thirdly, get a career coach. A coach is a guide and an expert in a subject matter. If you have a career or professional problem, you consult a career advisor who will then work with you to establish a plan through which you can realize career growth. In this day and age, you don’t need to feel stuck anymore as you can easily access career mentorship programs. The advantage with career coaching is that, you get expert advice and avoid wasting time. Additionally, it is also important that you get a mentor at your current workplace or outside. I have a fellow colleague who’s in the management level that I look up to. Whenever I encounter challenges or need wisdom on how to execute certain tasks, her advice comes in handy. Through observing her, I have learnt a number of things that would help my career grow.

If you are looking to transition to consultancy, focusing on building your networks now is very key because these are the people who are likely to give you business in time. Just the other day, I asked a friend who is a trainer how he transitioned from employment to running his own company. He explained that while in employment he built a lot of networks that have supported his business which has since grown.

Networking is an essential part of preparation for your next career level that you should not ignore. Eventually, as you connect with the right people, you will start achieving your career goals one after the other.
