How I (Finally) Got Over My Fear of Public Speaking And Presentation

By Perminus Wainaina

8 years ago I was scared to speak in front of a crowd or a room full of people.

The idea of speaking in a crowd felt like torture. I would lack words; feel nervous and everything I had planned seemed to disappear.

A few days before I had to talk in front of a lot of people, I would get this queasy feeling in my stomach that wouldn’t go away. I didn’t want to eat. I wanted to cancel so I didn’t have to deal with the stress

Whenever I attended a meeting, I always sat at the back of the room. I never sat in front due to fear.

I didn’t want to catch the attention of my boss and have to answer a question.

During meetings whenever a question was asked I would have an answer and deep down I wanted to participate but a more confident colleague would always answer before me. I was always second guessing myself. I wanted to be perfect.

My confidence in my ability to interact with others and get my voice heard was at an all time low.

My fear of public speaking and lack of self confidence was negatively affecting my professional and personal life. I wanted more but the two were a big obstacle.

By closely observing my colleagues I could see that those who were confident and spoke their mind during meetings and in public always got others attention. The boss favored them and they were getting what they wanted in life. They were doing well in their careers and in their social life too.

I wanted to be like them. Something had to change drastically.

Attend Our Training

I purposed to face my self limiting fears and become a confident public speaker.

It was not an easy journey but through a strong desire, mentoring, coaching and being trained I can say that I have mastered the art of being a confident speaker.

Do I get nervous? Hell yeah! This is something you cannot cure a 100%.

Later on I will share the number 1 secret that I use to overcome nervousness whether I am making a presentation to a client, being interviewed by the media or training others.

From a shy introverted professional I am now invited to T.V shows (watch my last interview at NTV here and another at K24 TV here) to give my views on latest HR trends, I also attend high profile board meetings and make winning presentations to clients.

As I have become confident the business has grown by more than 80%. I also appear on our You Tube channel where over 44,000 Kenyans have watched my videos on how to pass interviews.

And most importantly I have a sense of calmness and self assuredness that I can accomplish anything I set my eyes on.

I no longer fear to appear and speak to strangers.
