Maintenance Technician – Production (Technical workshop Paint Technician) Job

Purpose

  • Prepare and apply protective and decorative coatings on aircraft components to required technical and quality standards. As assigned, maintain Kenya Airways aircraft livery, paint components and equipment to meet Kenya Airways, KCAA and other applicable regulatory requirements whilst enhancing market appeal.

Responsibilities

Surface Preparation:

  • Remove old paint, corrosion, and contaminants using chemical and mechanical methods.
  • Clean, mask, sand, and chemically treat surfaces prior to painting.

Paint Application:

  • Use appropriate techniques and procedures to produce the required finish on the components
  • Work with epoxy, polyurethane, enamel, and chromate-based products as required.
  • Rectify paint defects such as runs, sags, fisheyes, or foreign object debris (FOD) contamination.
  • Diagnosing and resolving issues related to paint application, adhesion, or finish.

Quality Control:

  • Inspect and document all work, ensuring compliance with internal procedures, OEM manuals, and regulatory standards.
  • Check that tools and equipment are in a safe, tested and usable condition and within current calibration date.

Maintenance

  • Maintain spray equipment, paint booths, ventilation systems and tools in a clean, safe, and operational condition and return all tools and equipment to the correct location on completion of the activities.
  • Ensuring proper storage and handling of paints, solvents, and other materials.

Safety Compliance:

  • Adhere to procedures or systems in place for risk assessment, personal protective equipment, and environmental protection, handling of hazardous materials, relevant safety regulations and procedures.

Documentation:

  • Obtain and use the appropriate documentation (such as component maintenance manuals, paint technical data sheets and Material safety and data sheets).

Skills

  • Good communication and documentation skills.
  • Analytical Thinking.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications

  • Completed a recognized apprentice program or Holds relevant KNEC Engineering Diploma or equivalent from a recognized institution
  • Trade test training or certification in industrial or aircraft painting.
  • Knowledge of desktop publishing software and stencil cutting techniques.
  • Physical stamina and ability to work in confined spaces or at heights.
  • Familiarity with aerospace materials and coatings is a plus.
  • Minimum of 1 years of experience in aircraft or industrial painting.
  • Proficiency in surface preparation and paint application techniques.
  • Understanding of aircraft materials (aluminum, composites, etc.) and corrosion protection.
  • Attention to detail and a high standard of workmanship.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and process sheets.
  • Familiarity with paint thickness measurement tools.
  • Strong focus on safety, cleanliness, and FOD prevention.
  • Knowledge of paint mixing and color matching.
  • Familiar with paint systems and application techniques, including the use and maintenance of painting tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures related to paint handling and application.
