  • Bachelor’s Degree in Leather Technology or any other relevant qualification from a recognized institution

Professional Qualifications / Membership to professional bodies

  • Certificate in Computer application skills from a recognised Institution
  • Previous relevant work experience required.

This position is responsible for supervising improvement of the quality of hides and skins and promoting leather value addition for local and international market.

Managerial / Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Leather Development, Hides and Skins Inspectors
  • Supervises Leather Development Assistants, Hides and Skins Inspectors

Operational Responsibilities / Tasks

  • Inspecting the curing premises for the purpose of registration of such premises
  • Training, examining and issuing/renewals of slaughter man’s license of flayers
  • Ensuring that legal requirements pertaining to hides and skins trade are complied with
  • Arbitrating on the hides and skins trading disputes
  • Advising the tanners/cottage industry on technical and economic aspects of producing various types of leather and leather products
  • Providing advisory services to traders on hides and skins and leather trade: undertaking simple feasibility studies on leather development projects
  • Advising on the salt type, storage and method of application in curing hides and skins
  • Identifying markets where new curing premises (bandas) and stores need to be constructed and expansion of the existing ones
  • Advising on siting, designing and overseeing the construction of suitable hides and skins premises and stores
  • Participating in field days, barazas and workshops to advise livestock farmers on the proper methods of handling domestic animals for production of quality hides and skins
  • Training and demonstrating to traders and hides and skins flayers on the appropriate methods of flaying, cleaning, curing and storage of hides
  • Advising on issuance of dispatch notes to facilitate movement of hides and skins as a disease control tool; undertaking periodic monitoring of hides and skins trade trends with a view to curbing illegal trade; and
  • Performing training/instructing duties in a training institution.
