Biomedical Engineering Technologist Job Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital
Job Summary
The Biomedical Engineering Technologist / Biomedical Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, repair, calibration, and performance monitoring of all medical and ophthalmic equipment within the hospital. The role focuses on ensuring optimal equipment uptime, supporting clinical teams through user training, maintaining compliance with applicable standards, and driving cost-effective maintenance practices. Key equipment includes phacoemulsification machines, operating microscopes, lasers, slit lamps, OCT systems, visual field analyzers, autoclaves, and other diagnostic and surgical devices.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance and Repair
- Perform preventive maintenance (PPM) in accordance with manufacturer schedules for all ophthalmic and general medical equipment
- Diagnose and repair faults in equipment including phacoemulsification units, operating microscopes, YAG/SLT lasers, OCT systems, fundus cameras, A/B-scan devices, tonometers, autoclaves, and suction machines
- Install, calibrate, and commission new equipment, ensuring performance meets required specifications
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date service logs, job cards, and maintenance histories for all equipment
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns, prioritizing critical theatre and emergency devices
Safety and Regulatory Compliance
- Conduct electrical safety testing, laser safety checks, and radiation safety assessments where applicable
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory bodies including PPB, KEBS, radiation authorities, and manufacturer standards
- Support infection prevention and control (IPC) by validating autoclave cycles and washer-disinfector performance
- Decommission and dispose of obsolete equipment in accordance with NEMA and PPB guidelines
- Conduct routine checks of medical gas systems where applicable
- Ensure adherence to hospital policies, patient safety standards, and equipment handling protocols
Inventory and Asset Management
- Maintain an accurate and up-to-date asset register, including equipment model, serial number, location, warranty status, and service history
- Manage spare parts inventory by forecasting requirements, initiating procurement requests, and maintaining optimal stock levels
- Monitor equipment lifecycle costs and provide recommendations for replacement planning
- Support procurement processes by developing technical specifications, evaluating supplier bids, and conducting acceptance testing of new equipment
User Training and Technical Support
- Train clinical and support staff on proper equipment use, routine checks, and basic troubleshooting procedures
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and user guides for equipment operation and care
- Investigate user-related errors and provide retraining to minimize equipment misuse and downtime
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
- Track equipment performance indicators including uptime, downtime, mean time between failures (MTBF), and mean time to repair (MTTR)
- Prepare and submit monthly maintenance reports detailing preventive maintenance compliance, breakdowns, repair activities, and associated costs
- Support clinical audits by providing accurate equipment performance and maintenance data
- Contribute to capital expenditure (CAPEX) planning based on asset condition, utilization, and performance trends
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Electronics Engineering with a biomedical specialization
- Registration with the Association of Medical Engineering of Kenya (AMEK) or Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) (preferred)
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in hospital biomedical engineering
- Demonstrated experience with ophthalmic equipment (preferred)
- Valid practicing license where required
