The Head of Business Development is a senior leadership role responsible for driving the firm’s growth agenda, strengthening market positioning, and delivering high-value client acquisition strategies. The role provides strategic oversight of cross-border business development, client engagement, and competitive positioning across key practice areas.

This position also serves as the firm’s central authority on tenders, bids, and RFP processes, ensuring disciplined, high-quality submissions aligned with international best practice and the firm’s commercial objectives.

  • Define and execute a firm-wide business development strategy.
  • Position the firm competitively across priority sectors and jurisdictions.
  • Drive revenue growth through structured pipeline management and targeted pursuits.
  • Embed a high-performance culture around client development.
  • Undertake in-depth market intelligence to identify growth areas.

Role Scope & Accountability

  • Full ownership of the firm’s business development, bids, and proposals function.
  • Client engagement and relationship management.
  • Strategic alignment with Partners and Practice Heads on growth priorities.
  • Leadership of business development and marketing resources.

Tenders, Bids & RFP Leadership

  • Lead end-to-end management of all tenders, bids, and RFP processes.
  • Establish bid governance frameworks, approval thresholds, and quality standards.
  • Evaluate and prioritize opportunities based on strategic fit and commercial value.
  • Oversee preparation of compelling proposals, capability statements, and pitch materials.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, financial, and risk requirements.
  • Track bid performance metrics, including win rates and revenue conversion.
  • Build and maintain a centralized knowledge base of proposals and credentials.
  • Develop and execute international business development strategies.
  • Identify and penetrate new markets, sectors, and client segments.
  • Build and maintain senior-level client relationships.
  • Collaborate with Partners to shape client engagement strategies.
  • Drive thought leadership and brand positioning initiatives.
  • Lead cross-functional teams in delivering high-quality proposals.
  • Mentor and develop internal BD capabilities.

Governance & Decision Authority

  • Approve all high-value proposals, bids, and client submissions.
  • Recommend go/no-go decisions for strategic opportunities.
  • Approve allocation of resources for major pursuits.
  • Ensure alignment with firm policies and financial objectives.
  • Revenue growth from new and existing clients.
  • Proposal win rate and pipeline conversion.
  • Expansion into priority markets and sectors.
  • Client retention and relationship depth.
  • Timeliness and quality of bid submissions.
  • Proven leadership experience in business development within a law firm or professional services environment.
  • Strong track record in managing tenders, bids, and international RFPs.
  • Deep commercial acumen and strategic thinking capability.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and executive presence.
  • Ability to operate in complex, multi-jurisdictional environments.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time in line with the role and organizational objectives.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or equivalent advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of business development experience within law firms with proven international exposure and cross-border client growth.
  • Demonstrated expertise in relationship management, negotiation, and client engagement at a strategic level.
  • Strong commercial acumen with a track record in market analysis, opportunity identification, and business strategy execution.
  • Proficient in CRM systems and Microsoft Office suite; skilled in leveraging technology to drive business development initiatives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with executive presence and stakeholder management capability.
  • Solid project and account management experience, capable of leading complex initiatives end-to-end.
