How the PMP Course Helped Milka Reclaim Her Career After Losing Her Job
The process of looking for a job can be overwhelming, with endless applications, long silences, and rejections that make you question everything. For many professionals, the job search feels less like a path forward and more like running in circles. But sometimes, the right platform and the right guidance can change everything. That is exactly what happened to Milka, and her story is one of resilience, strategy, and hard-earned success.

Milka Kiptoo is not a fresh graduate finding her footing. She is a seasoned Grants and Financial Leader with over two decades of experience managing high-value portfolios for global organisations like USAID, FCDO, and the EU across multiple countries. Yet even with that impressive background, the job market had its own plans.
- How long were you looking for a job, and what triggered your decision to upskill?
After the USAID project I was attached to was globally terminated by the Trump Administration in early 2025, I found myself back on the job market. I had been actively searching between May and October — that is, about six months of submitting applications, following up, and waiting.
It was not easy. I knew I had the experience, but I also knew I needed to do something that would set me apart. That is when I decided to pursue my PMP certification.
2. What was your job search experience like?
Honestly, it was a mix of hope and frustration. On some days, I felt confident, having managed complex, cross-border programs, handled multi-million-dollar donor portfolios, and built financial systems from scratch in challenging environments. But the market does not always see a CV the way you do. The silence from employers was the hardest part. You apply, and you hear nothing.
What kept me going was the decision to invest in myself instead of just waiting. I enrolled in the PMP online course, and that changed my mindset completely. I felt alive again. I felt purposeful.
3. Did you face any challenges during the job search?
Yes, but I kept busy. I kept studying. I kept applying. The PMP journey gave me something to work toward every single day, which made the waiting feel less like stagnation and more like preparation.
4. What would you say to any professional navigating the job market right now?
Do not wait for the perfect opportunity to find you. Use the time you have to build yourself. I took a season of uncertainty and turned it into the most intentional period of professional growth I have had in years.
PMP gave me the language, the framework, and the confidence to walk into any interview and speak to project leadership at the highest level. I am waiting to do the exams, but the classes introduced a sense of confidence I never thought I needed. I highly recommend giving PMP a chance.
