Every time I interact with project managers, one of the things I hear them discussing include how they can succeed in their careers, how they can deliver successful projects, and how they can enhance their project performance.

Mike, an assistant project manager is one of the prospects who had shown interest in our training. He highlighted that lack of project management cert prevented him from climbing his career ladder and that motivated him to sign up for a project management course.

If you are a seasoned professional or you are new in the industry, one of the ways to thrive is to position yourself for success.

If you want to carve your way to success as a project manager, here are 7 ways:

1. Be A Certified Project Manager

When hiring or promoting, employers consider various factors to ensure they settle on the best candidates who can contribute to the success and improve the bottom line of the organization.
Among those factors include relevant skills, experience, and certification. For you to stand out in a competition, it is important to identify what makes you unique and a certification can be a differentiating factor.
Consider obtaining formal recognition in project management, for example getting PMP, PRINCE2, or project management certification.

2. Go Above And Beyond Your Tasks

Apart from managing your assigned tasks, it is important to go beyond your duties to elevate your performance as a project manager.
Do what you are expected to do, and identify the opportunities to contribute and add value to the outcomes of the project task.
Take up additional responsibilities or challenges to enhance your knowledge and skills and provide growth opportunities.

3. Master Project Management Software

In today’s digital age, task management software is essential in project planning, executing, and monitoring the progress.
When you are proficient in using these tools, you enhance project scheduling and resource allocation and this boosts your ability to streamline and improve project efficiency.
Being proficient with the use of software shows that you are adaptable to modern project management practices and you are committed to leveraging the technology for better project outcomes.

4. Learn From Failures And Successes

Reflect on the whole project cycle to understand the positive outcomes and the challenges that were encountered throughout the process.
Understand what worked out well and what did not and use those lessons to refine the strategies to improve future projects.

5. Seek Ways To Continuously Improve

Project management is a dynamic field, and if you stagnate as a project manager, it hinders your progress and competitiveness.
Embracing a mindset of continuous improvement leads to greater success in your career and it helps you to be relevant in your role.
Seeking ways to improve encourages project managers to find innovative project management solutions to the challenges.
Signing up for a project management course would have helped Mike expand his knowledge and position himself for career growth and long-term success.

6. Look For Mentors

Look for experienced project managers in your company, or industry to be a mentor who will guide you and support you based on their wealth of experiences.
A mentor will help you to navigate the challenges and give you directions to help you succeed in your career and achieve your goals.
Discuss your goals with your mentor to help them tailor their guidance to your specific needs and be open and willing to learn.

7. Be Proactive

Being proactive is one of the greatest traits that help project managers take initiative, plan, predict potential challenges, and make informed decisions.
Proactive project managers prioritize tasks, effectively allocate resources, and ensure that the project stays on track.
