How I Got My Dream Job through CSS Partner Website
When do you usually apply for a new job? When you are still working? When you are jobless or when you want to change your career?
For Lilian Chebet, her job search began while she was still working and despite not getting any positive feedback
Lilian Chebetafter many applications, she never gave up.
She kept checking various job boards and that is when she came across the role of Brand and Marketing Executive we had advertised on our partner website, Brighter Monday for our client Paper Bags. After applying, she stood out in a pool of many applicants.
I caught up with her to understand her journey and a few lessons you can pick from her.
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Lilian. I am a communications and marketing expert with over 6 years of experience working in the fruit industry, a professional consultancy firm, the tea processing industry, and the civil aviation industry. I hold a bachelor’s degree in commerce, marketing option, and a master’s degree in Communication, specialized in public relations.
How long have you been looking for a job?
I was lucky enough to get another job while I was still working. The job I was doing by then was not satisfying, so I sought other opportunities while working.
What has your job search experience been like?
I may not have the exact words to describe it, but some days seemed hopeful while others had me on the internet trying to leave the country, but simply, it was not an easy journey.
Are there any specific challenges you encountered in your job search process?
Yes. So many. Some employers would contact me and express their interest in hiring me then disappear. Others would not disclose the salary during the pre-interview process and when I realized that the salary was lower than what I expected, it would frustrate me after wasting resources, time, and effort.
Where did you hear about Corporate Staffing and the job opportunity?
I heard it through a partner website to CSS and after applying for the role, I was called for an interview.
How was the application and interview process?
The interview process was straight to the point, I would say and it was worth my preparation.
Did you think you would get the job?
I had applied for many jobs, others I wouldn’t get feedback but for this specific role, I was hopeful that I would get it because I had the right skills and experience.
Why do you think you got the job when other candidates didn’t?
My confidence and the relevant skills that I possessed relevant to the role gave me a competitive advantage. I am also quite good at expressing myself and therefore I was able to precisely explain my suitability for the role.
Many professionals continue to look for jobs during this tough time. What is your advice to them?
It is important to always keep on trying and never give up on your job search. When called for the interviews, prepare yourself well and in case you are not considered for the role, learn from the mistakes and improve in the future.
What do you think is the secret to getting a job in this competitive market?
Keep looking for various opportunities especially those that you meet the requirements and ensure your CV is tailored to the role for it to stand out.
