5 Tips to Make Training More Effective
Effective training that is responsive focuses on what the audience wants to learn and not just what you want to teach them.
I met Joseph, who has been a corporate trainer for a couple of years and despite having many years of experience training, he wanted to understand how he could be more effective. “I have a question which I know many people keep asking themselves. As a trainer, one of the traits that one ought to possess is a desire to learn new ways to be better but how I can be a great trainer?.”
Effective trainers work hard each day to ensure that the training is more engaging to increase learning and retention of the audience.
Here are five proven ways to make your training more effective.
1. Encourage Interactions
The trainer led by example and she chose activities that supported interaction. For example, questions were asked and the audience participated by responding.
Posing challenges will foster engagement and in the long run improve retention which will contribute to the success of the training.
2. Facilitate Note Taking
It is said that if you aren’t taking notes, you aren’t learning. When the audiences take notes, it improves their focus, promotes active learning, and boosts comprehension.
One of the audiences raised a question on what is the importance of taking notes? The trainer had to say this “Taking note boosts remembrance because it translates what we hear into a context in a meaningful way.”
3. Start Strong and Finish In The Same Note
Assume that the trainer begins with a low note, the audience will get bored and they may not be active throughout the training.
Grabbing the attention of the audience at the beginning of the training will go a long way. To ensure that you achieve the success of the training, kick things off with a question, what if scenario, or ask them to imagine.
To wrap up things on a high note, it is important to summarize the key takeaway points and give the audience a chance to reflect on what they have learned.
4. Be Clear
I once attended a training and the trainer used technical jargons throughout the training. I lost focus and turned to my phone. I also realized that the other audience did the same and no one concentrated.
It is important to use the language that is understood by everyone to ensure that there is no room for doubt about what you are delivering.
5. Measure, Analyse, and Improve
During the training, ensure that your objectives are clear to be able to measure your progress. Get feedback from the audience to understand your areas of strength.
When you measure your results, you keep improving because you will evaluate what works well and what doesn’t work, for you to fine-tune.
Finally,
For you to be an effective trainer, it is important to align your message with the needs of the audience for you to get positive results and ensure they walk away with a positive experience.
