In line with this commitment, the Graduate Trainee Optometrist supports the provision of quality eye care services through supervised clinical practice, accurate preliminary assessments, and effective patient support. The role involves active participation in patient care, assisting in eye examinations, and ensuring proper documentation and service delivery. The trainee will work closely with Ophthalmologist to build practical skills while ensuring patient safety and satisfaction.

As a performance-driven position, the Graduate Trainee Optometrist is accountable for patient support, service efficiency, learning progression, documentation accuracy, and adherence to clinical and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Management

  • Assist in conducting eye examinations and vision assessments
  • Support diagnosis of common visual and eye conditions
  • Assist in prescribing and dispensing eyeglasses and contact lenses
  • Provide basic patient care under supervision
  • Escalate complex cases to senior optometrists

Clinical Documentation & Records Management

  • Maintain accurate and complete patient records
  • Ensure timely documentation of examinations and findings
  • Assist in preparing patient reports and prescriptions
  • Ensure all patient records are organized and audit-ready

Patient Support & Service Delivery

  • Guide patients through eye testing procedures
  • Educate patients on proper eye care and lens usage
  • Ensure a positive patient experience during visits
  • Support front desk or optical unit where required

Clinical Coordination & Team Support

  • Work closely with optometrists and support staff
  • Assist in coordinating patient flow within the clinic
  • Participate in case discussions and training sessions
  • Ensure proper handover during shift transitions

 Compliance & Professional Standards

  • Adhere to clinical protocols and optometry standards
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times
  • Ensure ethical and professional conduct
  • Comply with licensing and regulatory requirements

Operational Support & Continuity

  • Assist in outreach programs, eye camps, and screenings
  • Support day-to-day clinic operations
  • Ensure availability during assigned shifts
  • Maintain accountability for assigned duties

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Certificate in Optometry from a recognized institution
  • Valid practicing license from a recognized regulatory body
  • Recent graduate or minimal work experience

  • Strong communication and patient handling skills
