Qualifications

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:

  • cumulative service period of nine (9) years. three (3) of which must have been in the grade of Senior Mechanical Engineer (Mechanical and Transport), CSG 8 or in a comparable and relevant position in the public service;
  • a Bachelor of Science or Engineering Degree in any of the following disciplines: Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical and production Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical and industrial Engineering, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering or its equivalent qualification for a university recognized in Kenya;
  • registration by Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) as a Professional Engineer;
  • registration as a Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (MIEK);
  • valid annual practicing License from the Engineers Board of Kenya; and
  • demonstrated high degree of professional competence and administrative capability required capability as reflected in wok performance and results.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities will include: –

  • planning and designing of technical works/ installations, vehicles, equipment, plant machinery and workshop;
  • coordinating activities in workshops and ensuring prudent utilization n of resources
  • conducting technical monitoring and evaluation of projects pertaining to mechanical engineering services (mechanical and transport);
  • identifying vehicle, plants and mechanical equipment for relocation, replacement, overhaul and disposal;
  • coordinating preparation of project costing and budgets for mechanical engineering (mechanical and transport) services;
  • preparing specifications for procurement of vehicles, plant and mechanical equipment;
  • taking part in preparation and implementation of the MTF budgets;
  • providing updates on charges and charges to lease rates;
  • coordinating testing, valuation and inspection of vehicles plant and equipment;
  • coordinating examination and grades/trade tests for drivers and plant operators;
  • preparation general layout drawings and shop flow organization workshop;
  • building up and maintaining a set of standard specification for types of vehicles, plant and equipment;
  • coordinating activities in the central workshop including repairs of manufacturing and production machines, plant and equipment, and analyzing progress and output reports;
  • monitoring usage of government vehicles, plants, machines and resources in the regions in liaison with the regional mechanical engineers;
  • carrying out research in emerging trends and technologies in mechanical engineering services (mechanical and transport);
  • keeping up to date information and records on vehicles, plants and equipment throughout their life cycle and inventory;
  • preparing strategic/work plans, budgets and setting targets: and
  • guiding and counselling of staff.
