Role Description
We’re looking for a Data Engineer with deep expertise in big data systems. This is a contract role based in Nairobi, Kenya, with hybrid flexibility. You’ll be responsible for designing, building, and optimizing high-volume, high-velocity data pipelines for one of our regional fintech client. Your work will include creating robust data models, developing and maintaining ETL workflows, managing distributed data storage, and ensuring the integrity, performance, and scalability of our data infrastructure. You’ll also collaborate with analysts and business teams to turn raw data into actionable insights.
Required Qualifications
- Expert-level skills in big data technologies e.g., Apache Spark, Hadoop, Kafka, Flink, or similar
- Strong background in data engineering, data modeling, and ETL/ELT pipeline development at scale
- Experience with distributed data warehousing e.g., Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, or similar
- Proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language used for data engineering (e.g., Python, Scala, or Java)
- Hands-on experience with cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and their big data services
- Strong grasp of data analytics and familiarity with machine learning data preparation workflows
- Proven problem-solving skills and ability to work independently while collaborating across teams
- Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree is a plus
- Familiarity with real-time data streaming, data governance, and data security best practices is an advantage
- This is a demanding role — in return, successful applicant will be well-compensated based on his/her proven abilities, with a package that will include travel allowance, housing allowance, pension, insurance, and any other extra valid benefit.
