Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Country Strategy

  • Lead the development and execution of IFAW’s Kenya strategy in close collaboration with the Africa Director, Program Directors, and global support teams, ensuring full alignment with the Institutional Strategic Plan.
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of annual work plans, budgets, and staffing plans to deliver against strategic priorities.
  • Monitor progress and ensure effective implementation of all country-level projects, integrating best practices and adaptive management.

Program Development and Innovation

  • Serve as the technical lead in generating innovative, high-impact program concepts, supporting fundraising efforts through proposal development and engagement with partners and donors.
  • Lead the identification and design of strategic program initiatives, including MOUs and frameworks of collaboration with key partners such as WWF, TNC, CI, UNEP, IUCN, WRTI, NEMA, and Elephant Cooperation.
  • Provide strategic guidance and technical input on thematic areas such as habitat restoration, rangeland management, land-use planning, governance, sustainable forest management, water resources, and nature-based enterprises.
  • Plan and coordinate climate action initiatives within Kenya’s Room to Roam landscapes, facilitating knowledge sharing and learning across regional teams implementing conservation work in Africa.
  • Ensure effective implementation and documentation of IFAW’s Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework (ESSF), including free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC), grievance mechanisms, and human rights-based approaches.

Program Delivery, Grants, and Impact

  • Oversee the delivery of all programmatic and grant-funded activities in Kenya, ensuring timely execution, donor compliance, and alignment with IFAW’s quality standards.
  • Collaborate with IFAW’s Impact and Evaluation team to measure and document program results, outcomes, and long-term impact.
  • Ensure integration of program and brand objectives through collaborative planning with relevant functional teams across the organization.

Partnerships and External Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with strategic partners across public, private, and civil society sectors to unlock resources and support for IFAW’s initiatives, including Room to Roam.
  • Represent IFAW in key forums, with government authorities, donors, and other stakeholders to advance IFAW’s mission and influence conservation agendas in Kenya.
  • Serve as IFAW’s primary media spokesperson in-country, in coordination with regional communications staff.

Operations and Team Management

  • Provide executive leadership and oversight of IFAW’s Kenya operations, including finance, procurement, administration, and human resources.
  • Support high-performing teams through effective employee relations, performance management systems, regular feedback, coaching, and mentorship.
  • Foster a culture of inclusion, innovation, and professional growth within the country office and among regionally hosted staff.
  • Supervise contractors and consultants to ensure delivery of quality outputs aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Convene regular management meetings and cross-functional working groups to support open dialogue, coordination, and decision-making.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • At least 5 years of supervisory experience
  • Proven track record of engagements with government, local community and NGO leadership platforms
  • Appropriate education/work experience in animal welfare/conservation/natural resources management, proven cross-cultural, interdisciplinary and landscape / geography-based work experience.
  • Experience in developing and operationalizing strategies that have taken a strategic priority to the next stage of growth.
  • Background in project design, concept development and proposal writing with experience with funding mechanisms like GBF, GCF and GEF.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; persuasive, credible, and polished communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills. Second language skills strongly preferred.
  • Proven record of accomplishment in field-based implementation of landscape level programs and an understanding of the importance of planning, monitoring and evaluation in delivering effective programmes.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.

  • Commitment, leading with integrity and working collaboratively with a management team of senior professionals.
