AI Helped You Write Your CV & Now You’re Jobless. Here’s Why.

I once had a walk-in CV client who came in looking tired, not the kind of tired that sleep can fix, the kind that comes from trying over and over again and getting nothing back.

“I don’t understand,” she said. “I’ve applied to so many jobs. I’ve done everything right.” So I asked her a simple question: “Walk me through your application process.”

She sighed, leaned back, and said, “I use AI to write my CVs. It makes them sound professional, and honestly, they look really good.” And she was right.

On paper, her CV looked perfect, with clean formatting, strong words, and a confident tone. But there was one problem: it wasn’t working for her.

As we went through her CV together, something became very clear very quickly. It sounded impressive, but it didn’t sound like her.

1. It Said All the Right Things, But Nothing Specific

Her CV was filled with phrases like “Highly motivated professional”, “Excellent communication skills,” and “Results-driven individual.”

I asked her what exactly she had achieved in her last role, and she had real, solid experience. But none of it was showing on her CV. AI had polished her words but erased her impact.

2. It Didn’t Tell Her Story

She had worked hard in her previous jobs. She had handled responsibilities, solved problems, and even gone beyond her role at times.

But her CV felt like it could belong to anyone. There was no personality, no journey, and no proof of growth. Just well-structured sentences with no real connection.

3. It Missed What Employers Were Looking For

When we compared her CV to the jobs she was applying for, the gap was obvious. Important keywords were missing, her experience wasn’t aligned with the roles, and her strengths were buried under generic descriptions.

AI had created a “good” CV, but not the right CV.

4. It Relied Too Much on Big Words

At one point, I asked her, “If a recruiter asked you to explain this line, would you?”

She laughed and said, “Honestly… I don’t even know what that means.” Yes, when your CV is filled with words you wouldn’t naturally use, it becomes harder to defend it in an interview, if you even get one.

5. It Didn’t Show Her True Value

The biggest issue wasn’t the formatting or the wording. Her CV didn’t clearly show why a company should hire her. And that’s the one job a CV must do.

In the end,

We started her CV again, with her at the center. We rewrote her experience in a clear, simple way, focused on what she actually did and achieved, tailored her CV to match the jobs she wanted.

A Few Weeks Later she sent a message that she had been called for two interviews this week. Same experience, same person with a different CV.
