How To Make Your CV Stand Out: Expert Advice From Diana
Your CV is more than simply a paper in today’s competitive job market. It is your marketing tool and the first thing a potential employer sees of you. But how do you make sure your application stands out when there are so many others competing for the same jobs?
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Diana Lewenei who has made it her goal to assist job searchers in answering that very question as a committed Career Advisor and CV Writer at Corporate Staffing Services (CSS).
Diana’s love of writing and job advancement is the foundation of her CV writing adventure. She discovered the ideal blend of her interests and abilities when she joined CSS in September 2022.
“My journey into CV writing began with my passion for helping individuals articulate their skills and experiences effectively,” she says
Diana’s experience working at CSS has changed her life. Each client had a different background, biography, and professional goal.
“This exposure has enhanced my understanding of various industries and professional paths. The collaborative environment at CSS promotes continuous learning and skill development, allowing me to refine my craft and provide the best possible support to job seekers.” She continues.
From her job, Diana has discovered that a resume should tell an engaging story rather than only listing experiences. “I have learned to view each CV as a unique narrative that reflects the individual’s journey, strengths, and aspirations. This experience has taught me to focus on tailoring CVs to specific job descriptions, highlighting relevant skills and accomplishments.”
During our chat, I had to ask about the common mistakes job seekers make on their CVS and how they can improve, and here is what she had to say
“Common mistakes I see include using overly generic language, failing to quantify achievements, and neglecting proper formatting. Many job seekers also overlook the necessity of customizing their CVs for each application.
To help clients address these issues, I guide them in identifying their unique strengths and encourage the use of specific examples and metrics to enhance their CVs. I also provide formatting tips to ensure clarity and professionalism, making their documents more visually appealing and easier to read.” she says
As we wrapped up our conversation, I asked for her advice on improving a CV. Here’s what she shared.
To improve your CV and make it stand out, I suggest the following:
- Tailor Your CV for Each Application: Focus on relevant experiences and skills that align with the job description.
- Use Strong Action Verbs: Begin bullet points with impactful action verbs to convey your contributions.
- Quantify Achievements: Include specific metrics or examples to demonstrate your impact in previous roles.
- Maintain Clarity and Conciseness: Keep your CV clear and concise, ideally fitting onto one page, especially if you have less than ten years of experience.
- Proofread for Errors: Always review your CV for spelling and grammatical mistakes, as a polished document reflects professionalism.
- Invest In a Professional CV: If you have revamped your CV over and over without any luck, maybe it is time to look for someone who does it professionally, and your luck might change
“By implementing these strategies, job seekers can enhance their CVs and improve their chances of making a positive impression on potential employers.” She concluded
