How to Network and Connect With Key Industry Players

All the jobs I have gotten in the last ten years, including my current job, have been filled through networking, and I will tell you how. My network has various professional relationships, including my current and ex-colleagues, alumni, friends, and industry professionals. Building and maintaining relationships has taken time and a lot of effort, but it has been worth it. Here are the tips I have used; – John, a Senior Communications Specialist who was sharing his story in our Career Advancement Mentorship Program.

1. Attend industry events;

I was intentional about this because this is where I met like-minded people who could talk about my area of expertise. Some events are usually free but also include investing money and time.

Having face-to-face interactions instead of email makes a big difference. One of the gentlemen I met at a networking event was the one who called me for a job they had not advertised for but wanted to fill, which I got.

2. I have a strong online presence

When you view any of my social media profiles, especially my LinkedIn, you will realize it is up-to-date.

There is something I want people to associate with me; as a communications expert, my niche is around that. I ensure my profiles are up to date, including having a professional photo, my professional summary, and my experience and achievements. I also actively share my expertise and follow groups and professionals in the fields I am interested in to learn and stay up-to-date.

Another tip is when you identify connections who have shared interests; it goes a long way in establishing and retaining the relationships.

Most employers will look at your LinkedIn to see if your CV matches your LinkedIn and also to understand your expertise, mainly when they are considering you for jobs.

3. I engage with my network’s content

I followed an influencer in our industry on LinkedIn and constantly commented and shared their content. I did not only comment, but I was always trying to position myself as an expert in my industry by giving expert advice.

We connected, and as time went by, he shot me a message, asking if I would be interested in a role they were hiring for, and that is how they headhunted me for my current position.

4. I invest in my relationships

When I make a network, I follow up on emails, phone calls, or even meet for coffee. I understand it is essential to water these relationships and make an effort from my side.

On the other hand, every time someone has approached me to be their mentor, there has been no follow-up from people who ask me this, or they take too long to reach out, and by the time they do, I don’t remember them, which makes it hard to pick up on the conversation.

A conversation could start by sending congratulations on an achievement they have made or wishing someone a happy birthday. It does not have to be complicated.

Networking can be difficult or easy, depending on how you approach it. The point is, be intentional about it.

 Conclusion;

Building and maintaining a professional network can help you advance and connect with other professionals with your interests.

It is where you find your next job, get and share information and professional advice, and get updated on what is happening in your industry.
