5 HR Interview Questions & How to Respond!

I recently interviewed Faith, a candidate who had been successfully placed by CSS for the HR role for our client in the manufacturing industry. She said that being an HR professional sometimes is not a guarantee to acing an interview. It takes preparation and it requires you to demonstrate why you are the best fit for the role.

When you study the common interview questions and understand how to respond to such questions, you set yourself up for success and land your dream job.

If you have acquired skills through the HR Master Course, you have gathered relevant experience in your field and you want to look for another job, you are likely to get questions from different directions.

The employers want to learn about your personality, skills, and qualifications and they structure the questions so that they gain an insight of how you think, how you respond, and how you handle different situations as a professional.

Apart from the common interview questions about yourself, here are 5 questions that you are likely to be asked in an interview and how to answer them.

1. What Motivates You To Work In The HR Department?

This is an open HR interview query that employers ask to better understand your personality, your work style and determine if you are the right for the role.

For example “As a people-person, I love engaging employees to understand their concerns and provide solutions to their problems. I also love helping others to fulfill their potential by recruiting them when they are right for the role and guiding them to succeed in their role.”

2. What Do You Understand About The Role Of the HR Department?

The employers ask this question to check if you understand the human resource functions and what the job entails.

This question can be posed to HR professionals seeking entry-level positions and even senior roles to check if they understand their approach and their level of HR knowledge.

 Answering well these HR interview inquiries shows that you are proactive and you are up to date with what you will be handling if offered the job.

For example” I understand that human resource management plays a crucial role and it handles various tasks from recruiting and selecting candidates, training, payroll management, administrative roles, disciplinary actions, to termination processes. It also acts as a link between the management and the employers.

3. Tell Me About A Situation When You Dealt With A Complaint.

This question is asked during an HR interview to find out how you resolve workplace conflicts. The HR professionals handle conflicts between employees and managers.

When answering this question, demonstrate that you can these conversations professionally, respectfully, carefully, and confidentially.

Identify the relevant examples and describes the steps you took to resolve the situation. For example, you can mention who you talked to, how you got them to open up, what next steps you took, and what was the outcome.

4. How Do You Ensure Diversity Policies Are Adhered To In The Workplace?

The employers ask this HR question to find out if you have an understanding of the policies in the work and how they can be implemented.

To answer it successfully, give examples of how you have supported or how you shaped the new policies for example introducing staff training to ensure that staffs are compliant with company policies.

5. How Do You Ensure You Get Results?

This is a behavioral question that is used to test how you have handled past situations and gauge your future decision-making. Give specific examples from previous experience and show how you met the set goals.

For example, while working as an HR officer, I met my monthly interview goals by implementing candidate marketing strategies.

Finally,

During the HR interview, you are likely to face a variety of questions. Some will be behavioral, competency, case study, and brain teaser questions.
