Job Purpose

To support the implementation and management of maize breeding nurseries and field trials through timely establishment, maintenance, accurate data collection, and adherence to breeding protocols, in order to contribute to the development, evaluation, and advancement of improved maize varieties.

Key Responsibilities

• Establish and manage maize breeding nurseries, crossing blocks, and hybrid evaluation trials.
• Conduct controlled pollination activities including detasseling, selfing, sibbing, crossing, and rogueing to maintain genetic purity.
• Implement trial layouts in line with approved experimental designs and breeding protocols.
• Collect, record, and validate phenotypic and agronomic data accurately.
• Support harvesting, seed processing, storage, and proper handling of breeding materials.
• Supervise field assistants and casual laborers during nursery and trial operations.
• Maintain accurate breeding records and prepare periodic progress reports.
• Ensure compliance with quality, biosafety, and occupational health and safety standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture or a related field with a minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience, OR Diploma in General Agriculture or related field with at least 4 years’ relevant experience.
• Demonstrated experience in field research or crop production activities.
• Knowledge of experimental design and basic data management principles.
• Proficiency in MS Office applications (especially Excel).
• Strong analytical and observational skills.
• Good report writing and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and under minimal supervision.
• Willingness to work in field conditions and travel as required.
• A valid driving/riding license will be an added advantage.
