You’re Getting Interviews. So Why Aren’t You Getting Hired?

Last Month, I requested to sit in an interview room with our hiring managers. Michael, an IT expert with over five years of experience, walked in. He looked polished, wore a nice suit and had a briefcase, which made him look so professional. But when Natalia, our lead recruiter, asked a simple question about his biggest achievement, I saw him tense up.

‘’ I mean, I just do my job, you know?” he answered after a few seconds of awkward silence.

That was it. He did not offer any follow-up answers. After five years, all he could say was “I just do my job.”

I was secretly rooting for him, but after that question, his answer made all the panel interviewers sigh in disbelief. Natalia gave him a smile and a soft “We will get in touch.”

Michael is not the only one. I have watched many talented professionals fumble through interviews. Some go blank when asked a behavioural question as simple as Tell us about yourself. Others go as far as underselling themselves.

I have realized that these people don’t lack skills or experience. They’re just not prepared enough.

And what makes it worse is your CV might be perfect; the qualifications might match the Job description, and you still might not ace the interview.

It’s a skill. And like any professional skill, you can learn it.

So, I approached Natalia to ask her what they are looking for. What she said shocked me.

Here’s something recruiters don’t say. They have already made up their minds about a candidate in the first few minutes, and sometimes less.

“The rest of the interview is just us confirming it,” Natalia said.

“That very first impression is rarely about your technical skills. We already have your CV. It is about your confidence. Do you seem like someone the client would want to work with? It is about your story and how you tell it.”

“Everyone who gets called for an interview is qualified for the position. So, we look for the extra thing.” Natalia continued.

I have seen candidates with fewer qualifications getting job offers over those who are more experienced. All because of how they connect. They knew the stories to tell the recruiters.

They understood that when recruiters ask, “Tell me about yourself?” they are not actually asking about your life story. They are the ones who knew how to turn a “what’s your biggest weakness?” from a trap into an opportunity.
