In today’s competitive job market, getting a job can be a daunting task and it is no secret that the journey can be filled with setbacks and frustrations.

Amidst the challenges, there are stories of professionals who persevered and eventually triumphed in their job search.

Meriba Mwende

Meribe Mwende utilized various platforms to look for a job and through Facebook; she came across the role of Resource Mobilization & Fundraising Officer we had advertised for our client, a community development organization.

Let us look at what shaped her one year journey and pick a few strategies that you can employ to succeed.

Tell us about yourself.

I am a motivated and results-driven professional with extensive experience in project management, monitoring and evaluation, and fundraising in non-governmental organizations and resources.

I have developed a strong understanding of the fundraising process, best practices, and how to effectively engage donors to increase donations.

How long have you been looking for a job?

I had been looking for a new job for approximately 1 year and 3 months because I was looking for an opportunity that would challenge, develop my skills further, and get a job in non-governmental organization (NGO). When I left my previous workplace, I took time to explore job opportunities that aligned with my career goals, and CSS helped me to successfully secure one.

What has your job search experience been like?

My job search experience has been both challenging and adventurous. I encountered difficulties during the process but I was focused on getting an opportunity that aligned with my passion and career goals.

I submitted several applications, but I did not receive interview invites which pushed me to commit myself to applying for more jobs especially those that matched my career objectives.

Are there any specific challenges you encountered in your job search process?

Yes, during my job search process, I did not know how to effectively highlight my diverse skill set on my CV despite extensive expertise in fundraising, leadership, and project management which reduced my chances of being invited for interviews.

Where did you hear about Corporate Staffing and the job opportunity? And would you recommend Corporate Staffing to anyone?

I learned about CSS through Facebook and I was intrigued to learn more about their services, and the content on their YouTube channel.

I would highly recommend Corporate Staffing to any professional looking for a new job or career advancement program.

How was the application and interview process?

It had been long since I applied for jobs and therefore I had to take some time to craft a perfect CV that was tailored to the job that I was looking for.

The interview process was fair because I had sharpened my interview skills through the interview guidelines that I had been receiving which positioned me for success during the interview.

Did you think you would get the job? Please give a reason.

I was not sure if I would be considered for the role because my background was in monitoring, evaluation, and learning experience and I was interviewed for resource mobilization and fundraising office but I had some experience that the client was looking for.

What do you think employers look for or check when selecting suitable candidates?

They prioritize relevant work experience and skills to ensure that the candidate will contribute to the success of the company.

They also check the technical skills essential for the job, adaptability, teamwork, the ability to learn and grow within the organization, and cultural fit.

For you to navigate in a competitive job market, it is important to maintain a positive mindset and be persistent.

Connect yourself with like-minded professionals who can help you and when applying for any job, tailor it to a specific role.

Most importantly, trust the process; be hopeful and believe in your skills and the right opportunity eventually coming your way.

What do you think is the secret to getting a job in this competitive market?

  • Expand your networks because it is a powerful tool to discover hidden opportunities and let others know that you are looking for a job.
  • In case you receive rejection, never give up but learn from the experience and refine your approach.
  • Seek help from experts for example career coaching, interview coaching, and professional CV writing to help your job search be more effective.
