I came across a LinkedIn message from an HR professional, Jake (not his real name) sharing his experience with me.
‘’Hi. I want to advance in my career this year. I feel stuck in my current position and I keep doing the same thing every day. I am not growing in my career and neither do I feel appreciated in my workplace. Last year, I attended several interviews but I did not succeed in any interview or even get called back. I do not know what the problem might be. Kindly advise’’
Just like Jake, we all want to advance in our careers and it might be one of the things that are in our new year’s resolutions. But for that to happen, it is important to think about the steps we can take to achieve this.
Here are some tips I gave Jake on what to do to improve his career this year;
1. Be a Strategic Thinker
Sometimes you have to consider doing more than your daily duties if you want to be considered a leader and someone who can be consulted on important matters.
You can do this by learning about the business and what other departments do, identifying key areas for training, using data to help management make smart decisions and much more.
Having an understanding of the business and contributing value helps you position yourself better even for a promotion.
2. Get A Mentor
For instance, if Jake had a mentor, he would have had better guidance. His mentor would have given him feedback on what he was doing wrong during interviews and share ideas on how he can improve. They would have given him advice on how to do better in his workplace by learning new things to be recognized and appreciated or even connected him with good networks that can help his career.
Mentors are important as they are more knowledgeable and have more experience in our field.
They help us stay accountable to our goals, encourage us and even give us constructive feedback.
Sharing your experiences or bouncing off ideas to someone with more experience helps you get the best advice.
3. Be Open to Regular Feedback
Feedback is important to anyone looking to grow in their career whether positive or negative. It also helps you perform better and make a real impact on your work.
For instance, you can consider doing one-on-one meetings with employees or even the head of departments to understand what can be improved or identify areas you can impact change. You can also consider anonymous surveys to also get this feedback.
Feedback is important for personal and career growth as you are always trying to improve in one way or another.
4. Learn a New Skill
To become more competitive in the job market, developing your HR skills is crucial. They not only help you advance in your career and stay ahead of others but also help you understand how you can do your job better in your current work which can position you for growth.
This could be as easy as taking a short course online. It helps you increase your expertise in your field deepens your experiences and expands your understanding of how best to support.

5. Be Flexible
When the pandemic hit almost two years ago, a lot of us were caught unawares which forced us to step out of our comfort zone. How I was used to doing things did not work anymore as the world was changing and I needed to be flexible enough to find new solutions.
For instance, my companies’ HR policy had to be reviewed more regularly now as changes such as allowing employees to work from home happened in which it was crucial to implement things that would work for both the employees and myself.
The world around us is changing and so is the future of HR. It is, therefore, crucial to always stay ready and flexible to adopt new things.
Equipping yourself with tools to help you lead change and help manage any changes that come effectively is important.
Everyone wants to advance in their career but it is important to identify what steps to take to do so to ensure we stay ahead.
