7 Questions You Should Never Ask During An Interview

Do you have any questions for us?”

Did you know that responding “No, I have no questions,” is the worst answer you can ever give the interviewer?

When asked this question, it is an opportunity for you to ask not only the right but smart questions.

You should collect the information about the job and employer, demonstrate that you have done your research well, and show that you are the best fit.

Ask the right questions and the employer will know you are interested in the job but the wrong questions and you will miss the opportunity.

Preparing well for the interview allows you to understand the irrelevant questions that might put the interviewer off.

Here are 7 questions to avoid:

1. Salary and Benefits

Asking the question about benefits and salary especially in the first interview usually puts off the interviewer. The first interview is meant to sell yourself. Therefore, questions about salary can wait until later.

2. Flexible Schedules

Can I work from home?

Although many companies allow for flexible hours and hybrid environments today, it is still inappropriate to ask this question. The interviewer may think that you want to be out of the office when the job requires you to be in the office most of the time.

It also shows that you are concerned about your needs and that not those of the company. Allow the company culture to guide you with flexible work schedules and do not be the one initiating this.

3. Questions That Start with “Why?”

Avoid the questions that start with why. Why don’t you have a flexible schedule? Why is this position open? Why’, is a matter of psychology and it puts the interviewer on the defensive side.

Instead of asking a question like ‘why did you lay off senior workers’? You can say, “I understand about the layoffs in your company last year. What’s your opinion on how the company is positioned and prepared for the future?”

4. “Who Are Your Competitors?”

This question may show that you didn’t do your research well. Proper interview preparation involves finding out about the products, culture, competitors, and unique selling points. Before asking such questions, determine if you can get the answers by googling the company’s website.

5. How Soon Do You Promote Employees?

You haven’t been given an offer and you asking for a promotion? This shows arrogance and it is like putting the cart before the horse. Rather than asking when the promotion will occur, you can ask how the success of the position looks like or how can you perform for you to get a promotion.

6. Do You Monitor Employees Social Media Profiles?

This question is best when left unanswered. It shows that you are hiding something. Erase anything that may prevent you from getting the job. Some employers usually do a background check and if they find out unpleasing content in your social media platforms then you will miss the opportunity.

7. Rumor Has It

You should approach this question carefully. You may have found something in the newspaper about the company but don’t include grapevines because it shows unprofessionalism.

Finally,

You should know the questions to ask and which ones to handle with extra care. This will help you avoid missteps and get you through the interview process to get a job. Asking the right questions helps you to stand out in a good way. Ask the right questions, and you will increase your chance of getting the job but ask the wrong question and you will keep asking why you receive regrets after the interview.
