“I’m afraid I will never get a promotion!”
This was Jane’s sentiment during a call a few months back when she sought to join the career coaching mentorship program.
Jane has been in employment for the last six years. Through this time, she’s been at the same position. Her peers who got into the job sector around the same time as she now hold supervisory and managerial positions.
After three years of no growth, Jane thought the company she was working for was the problem. She applied for jobs in other organizations, but her applications mostly went unanswered.
For the few interview calls she got, she would soon after receive a regret email.
Jane decided to stick where she was and work on growing her career.
Years have passed, and still, nothing!
“I feel like I’m the laughing stock amongst my friends!” says Jane.
“The people whom we graduated together are now building their houses and buying cars, and I’m still here, earning the same salary I was all those years ago,” she continues.
I sought to better understand what had held back Jane from career growth. More importantly, I wanted to help her get to the next step of her career.
Are you in a similar situation as Jane?
Are you overdue for a promotion?
With just a few weeks left to the end of the year, here is how you can power yourself to a promotion:
1. Understand Where You Are Heading To
Be clear with where you want to be. Understand the reason why you want the position, and the responsibilities because promotion comes with new responsibilities. Be clear on the position you are targeting and what it is all about you before you aim to get there.
2. Analyze The New Position
After identifying the position that you want, you have to understand what the job involves. Understand the skills that are needed for you to perform the responsibilities.
Compare your current position and the position you want then analyze the difference for you to identify what development is needed.
3. Look For Opportunities
If you want to get promoted and grow in your career, you should go for it because it may be difficult for the opportunity to present itself. Look for opportunities that will help you demonstrate your skills and capabilities. This will help you gain experience and utilize your skills.
You can volunteer to help in target position in an office when someone is not around. Grab the opportunities that are available and you can ask the manager to help in some duties that will help you learn.
4. Create A Development Plan
The best way to a promotion is to get support from your supervisor or manager for the essential development required.
Reinvent your career through coaching mentorship programs and have a development plan that you can review with them based on your assessment and analysis. Understand the perspective of the demands of the job and what they see should be developed.
5. Perform Your Work Well
Getting promotions sometimes to people may seem exciting. Do not drop the ball and forget to perform the responsibilities given to you. You have to sacrifice your time to put in additional hours and ensure that you perform the tasks given to you as this is a great investment for the future.
6. Get Feedback
Have a plan and be accountable for it. When you achieve, review your performance with the boss and ask for feedback.
Getting feedback will help you know your strengths and weakness. This will also help you keep track of your progress and know the areas that you should improve for you to perform better.
7. Be Ready For Challenges
New positions come with new challenges and you should understand that the journey might not always be smooth.
Some of the things will have to change and you will be required to make some adjustments to accommodate that. Keep an eye on the goal and take this as an opportunity to grow and provide solutions to the problems.
You are responsible for your success and if a promotion is your career goal, you are the one to make it happen by taking the necessary steps.
Do you feel like your career has stagnated? Have you been passed over for a promotion over and over again? Take up this career coaching mentorship program and be on your way to success!
