How I Secured A Job Through CSS After Writing Them Off

What perception do you have about recruitment firms? Could it be what is holding you from applying for certain jobs?

Joyce Juma had always known about Corporate Staffing, but always hesitated to apply for a job because of what she thought about the company.

“I just thought it was like other agencies and I had to pay…” she says.

She saw this sales & marketing job on our LinkedIn page. We had advertised the job for our client, Ramtons Ltd.

Even though she still had her reservations on using recruitment firms, she applied…and the rest, is history.

I recently caught up with her just to understand what made her apply for this job. More importantly, I sought to know how her job search journey had been, after losing a job over a year ago.

There is a take-away for you here…

How long have you been looking for a job?

I lost my previous job because of the ongoing pandemic. Since then, I have been looking for a job unsuccessfully, for over a year.

Throughout your job search process, what was your experience been like?

It was horrible and difficult. At some point, I even stopped searching and gave up because I did not think anyone was hiring. Many companies were downsizing and the few people that I knew that were still employed were either on pay-cuts or on unpaid leave. That made the situation more hopeless for me.

Are there specific challenges you encountered in your job search process?

Yes, I did.

My main challenge was going for interviews and not getting any feedback. I did not know whether to move on to the next job or keep on waiting, especially because I was broke and there were other interviews to attend.

I would really like to encourage employers to do – kindly give your interviewees feedback.

Where did you hear about Corporate Staffing and the job opportunity?

I had heard about Corporate Staffing before. However, I used to think that it was one of those agencies where you pay a certain fee to be added into the job seekers database. I also thought that once an individual gets a job through you, a certain percentage of their salary would be taken. So, I never really bothered to apply for any jobs.

I came across this particular job through the Corporate Staffing LinkedIn page, and the job description described what I loved. And so, even with my own perception of Corporate Staffing, I still went ahead and applied. I was called the following day.

In the waiting room at Corporate Staffing offices as I waited to be called in for the interview, I met another individual who was interviewing for this same role and I mentioned my concerns to him. He was quick to reassure me that Corporate Staffing was different and that even the job he currently had was from Corporate Staffing. That made me calm.

How was the application and interview process?

The process was smooth and straightforward.

My interviewer was really nice.

What I found different is the fact that the interview happened on a Saturday. But all through I felt comfortable.

I loved the whole process. The feedback was also very prompt. I got interviewed on a Saturday and given feedback on a Monday.

Did you think you would get the job?

Well, you can never be so sure about getting a job, until you actually get it.

I was happy that I had passed the first interview and from the job description, they wanted a lady. This helped me remain hopeful.

Congratulations on getting the job. What would your advice to other professionals be?

Don’t give up. Don’t be scared that a certain company is not hiring. If they were not, they would not have advertised for the role.
