How C.S.S Helped Me Get A Finance Manager Job During Corona

Have you been feeling stuck and wondering what could be going wrong with your job applications? Truth is, applying for jobs and not getting any feedback can be a daunting process. I, however, want to remind you that you are not alone.

As promised in our previous post, we will continue profiling professionals who have applied to our job adverts, have gone through our interview process, and gotten hired during this coronavirus period.

On 5th June 2020, we advertisedFinance & Admin Manager Job for our client, the College of Human Resource Management (CHRM) on our website, and other partner websites. We received over 500 applications. Of those, we shortlisted 30 for the first interview, where we recommended five candidates for the client interview, and ultimately one of them got the job!

I recently had a chat with him and this is what he had to say:

Tell us about yourself and your career journey.

My name is Justin Masila Musomba. I am a finance and accounts professional with over 8 years’ experience in various industries: the hotel industry, the agricultural sector, and the FMCG industry – just to mention a few.

I started working almost immediately after graduating from university in 2009. I landed a 3-month internship in 2010, and soon after got a job. That began my career in the finance and accounting field.

Where did you hear about Corporate Staffing and the job opportunity?

Corporate Staffing is a well-known company. I have known it for many very many years. If you are a job seeker and do not know about this company, that is very interesting.

I am even subscribed to their job alerts that come through email. That’s how I saw this position and decided to apply for it.

How long had you been job searching before coming across this job?

I had been looking for a job since March. After the first few cases of Covid-19 were announced in the country, things got tough for my employer. As a result, I was sent on unpaid leave. This is when I decided to actively throw myself into the job search pool.

How was the application and interview process?

The process for me was very smooth and professional. I sent my application and got a call about 3 days later telling me that I had been shortlisted for a face-to-face interview at the C.S.S offices. I arrived and saw all the safety measures that had been put in place to protect our health.

After about a week, I was invited for a second interview with the client. This was also smooth especially because the details were communicated beforehand.

Less than a week later, I received a phone call that I was their (the client’s) preferred candidate of choice. That is how I got the job!

Having gone through what many other professionals are facing such as pay cuts, unpaid leave, and even others being laid off, did you think you would get a job during this time?

I honestly did not think I would. I had applied for so many jobs before this one and I just kept on applying every time I received an email alert. My biggest worry was that with the pandemic, not many people were hiring.

Many job seekers are skeptical about finding jobs during this difficult time. Based on your experience, what can you tell them?

Keep applying for jobs, one will open up no matter how long it takes. I had applied for so many jobs and although I didn’t think I would get a job during this pandemic, here I am. So keep hope alive.

In the end,

Just like Justin, you too may have been applying for numerous jobs. However, don’t lose hope. Keep on applying and an opportunity will come your way. All the best!
