Corporate Staffing Services recently held a training session on CV Writing and Interview skills at the invitation of Transition Initiatives for Stabilization (TIS), an NGO Programme under DAI. The NGO is closing one of its program and therefore decided to equip their staff with job search skills as they look for other opportunities.

The training focused on how to write a compelling CV that gets you the interview, and addressed the common interview questions that the DAI-TIS staff highlighted as an issue.

Kicking off the training was Florence Mukunya, a professional CV writing expert at Corporate Staffing. Being that the staff in training at DAI-TIS ranges from entry level to senior management, Florence outlined the components of an ideal CV, highlighting the important sections that are your achievements, career profile and work experience.

Common issues discussed at the training

From the talk, it emerged that including your achievements on the CV is a great asset to your application as recruiters and employers are inclined to want to know more about you. Still on achievements, Perminus Wainaina, the head of recruitment at Corporate Staffing decided on a practical test where he asked a few members of staff to highlight their achievements. If you were in that room, what would you mention as your achievements? The answer to that question may be what gets you to the interview stage.

It was also noted that including hobbies that are of value to your profession and position in question is of great importance. The hobbies act as an added confirmation to employers that you are the best fit.

Moving from CV Writing and into interview skills, Perminus asked the group to share some of the common interview questions that had come up as challenging in their experience. As is common in most training events that Corporate Staffing has been to, three interview questions stood out as the most challenging of all. These are the Tell me about yourself, why are you best suited for the position or the alternative why should we hire you and What Salary are you expecting.

The interview questions were discussed at length, with Corporate Staffing highlighting the importance of giving an answer that the employers are looking for. “You get hired for two things only; your technical skills and soft skills,” said Perminus amidst the discussion.

Last to be discussed at the CV Writing & interview skills training was the job search process, where networking still remains the most effective in getting jobs.

Are you well prepared for your next better job? There is only one way to know, and that is to engage a professional.
