Perminus Wainaina, the Head of Recruitment and Managing Partner at CSS, joined Capital in the Morning show host Renee Ngamau on Tuesday, 27th September, 2016 for a discussion about Kenya’s job market.

The discussion centred on issues such as why candidates get rejected for jobs, how a recruitment firm adds value to candidates and employers, when it is okay for candidates to call recruiters about an interview and why you don’t need god fathers to get a job.

How Job Seekers Can Find Opportunities in Kenya

In the 30 minutes discussion on Capital FM’s morning show and with Perminus Wainaina answering various questions from listeners, it was clear the reason most job seekers are not getting jobs is because they are just lazy.

“Job seekers get rejected for various reasons. You could be applying to a job you are qualified for but the way you present yourself gets in the way of getting the job. As a job candidate you must ask yourself; how are you presenting yourself in the job search?” says Perminus, adding that most candidates do not take job application serious with some sending out forwarded CVs to employers.

When asked about when candidates should call recruiters to check on the progress of their application, Mr. Wainaina advises that follow up calls should be done systematically. Do not call as soon as you make your application or when you just leave the interview room. When to call should depend on the level you are at in the application process.

And in response to a question from the listeners on Kenya’s job market and the need to have a god father, Mr Wainaina had this to say. “Employers come to us looking for candidates to fill in positions at their companies and we have to find the most ideal candidate. It is not about whom you know or that you got a first class, employers are looking for candidates that will add value to their companies. And that’s what every candidate needs to understand.”

In today’s job market, it is not enough that you are qualified for a certain position. Mr Wainaina insists that you need to give priority to networking and LinkedIn in your job search process. This is how job seekers can get good job opportunities in Kenya. And until you get an offer letter, do not assume that the interview went well because the interviewer said they will call you.

The Capital FM morning show discussion came to an end with a plea to job seekers to get serious about their job search. If you are not sure about why you are not getting jobs or why you flop after every job interview, consult with a professional. Corporate Staffing Services offers free consultation for candidates.
