How Not To Contact Recruiting Firms For Your Job Search

Recruiting firms, like Corporate Staffing Services, are very active in what we do. You will find us on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, where we are accessible to job seekers. While we may not be able to help every job seeker, we do our best to share job search tips and give career advice.

There are very many job seekers who reach out to us for jobs. While some job seekers do it in a professional and straightforward manner, some may need to improve their approach to increase their chances of getting a response.

When reaching out to recruiters for career advice, job search tips or for networking purposes, it’s important for you to give the best possible impression.

Here are some of the most common approaches that you should avoid

  1. Here’s my CV Get me a job

This is the most common question that we receive on a daily basis from job seekers.

Do your research on the recruiting firm and get to know what kind of candidate services they offer. Don’t assume every recruitment firm finds jobs for candidates.

For example, Corporate Staffing Services recruits on behalf of clients by finding candidates to fill a job. We do not search for jobs on behalf of the candidates. This is a key mistake that many job seekers make in their quest of finding a job.

Recruiting firms are happy to share advice and tips, but it the work of the job seeking candidates to position themselves and apply for jobs that they feel match their experience and qualifications.

  1. Do you know anyone at Safaricom, EABL or PWC?

This is also one of the most asked questions we get every day. We know you want to work for industry giants and you want a shortcut to get there.

However, recruiting firms are not your answer. It is always better to network directly with the person you need without using a proxy.

In this digital era, it is acceptable to use social media sites to send an introductory request provided you do it professionally. You know best what you want in terms of your career goals and the exact person to contact.

  1. I have a degree in HR, do you have openings that fit my profile?

We handle dozens of openings at any given time.

These openings are handled by different people or teams who only have real visibility to the opening they are recruiting. We will always advertise a position they are recruiting for on our website. It’s up to you to identify positions that speak to your career goals, interest and talents and apply.

Always take personal initiative to search online for positions that match your skills and interests and those you can pursue.

Recruiters may never remember all positions they are recruiting, so you have to look them up.

  1. Writing inquiries with little professionalism

When reaching out with an inquiry or for advice, be sure to be formal, use an official language and stick to professional salutations.

Professionalism in email correspondence gives the person responding confidence that they are indeed dealing with a professional and your chances of getting a reply are high. Recruiters get very many requests for jobs and they don’t always have the time to respond to all.

It is the job seekers who portray professionalism that stand a higher chance of being taken seriously.

  1. Not following the instructions given in applying for jobs

Corporate Staffing has a mailing list of job seekers who subscribe to our site to receive job alerts. It is this mailing list that we use to send jobs to qualified candidates for them to apply.

Most recruiters often send a link to the website where the specific job has been advertised for full job details and instructions on how candidates can apply.

A common mistake that job seeking candidates make is not following the application instructions given. Most candidates respond to those specific emails with a CV attached without having followed the job application instructions provided.

Not following the application instructions provided leads to automatic disqualification of the candidate.
