How to Get The Salary You Deserve. 3 Important Steps to Figuring Out What Expected Salary to Quote

Most people do not know how to negotiate for the best salary deals reasons being they do not know how much they are worth. Here is a simple guide on how to figure out what to quote as your expected salary.

1. Do your research. 

Mercy Muini an Administrations Officer is currently applying for similar roles and has dilemma quoting her expected salary as instructed on most of the job advertisements.

“I do not know how to gauge or what criteria to use when quoting my expected salary; I have been with my recent company for five years so I do not know how much the industry is currently offering as I have not been applying much for new jobs.” She pours out her frustrations.

Speaking to Muthoni Ndegwa, one of the recruitment Managers at Corporate Staffing Service, I sort to know how to go about this. She advises on carrying out a research on how much similar companies are paying for similar positions.

“If you actually visit the Corporate Staffing Services website you will find valuable information as most of our jobs are posted with salary quotations, the jobs also come from diverse industries which goes a long way in helping with the research.”

2. Get to know as much as possible about the role.

John Auma got a Sales Executive job six months ago in the initial stage he felt that he had negotiated for the best package but he just recently discovered that he might have made a huge mistake. “My job requires a lot of traveling, when I was negotiating for my salary I did not know that the role would require much traveling, I now have to foot the traveling bill from my salary and I feel like I should just quit.” Ms Ndegwa advises that, “Knowing all there is about an offer that you are about to accept is the key to negotiating for the best salary.” She notes that, “If travelling, airtime and commissions are part of the benefits that come with the role they should be noted and clearly stated on the offer letter.”

3. Get a clear understanding of the Skills, Experience and Qualifications required for the role.

“Most are the times I see candidates getting excited by salaries quoted on jobs but regret after signing a contract,” Ms Ndegwa tells me. To this she advises that, “Quantify your value vis a vis the requirements of the role, this you do by understanding the scope of the role and clarifying with the recruitment manager on what is not clear, you might be offering more in terms of the skills and experience you possess and this need to be factored in when it comes to your salary.”

Finally Ms Ndegwa notes that, “When preparing for a job search many candidates have taken a step in ensuring that they have their CVs stand out to employers, they even go a step further and seek interview preparation services which packages them very well and most end up getting the job offers, my observation though many of them still struggle with quantifying their worth.”
