Going for a Bank Clerk job interview? Here are questions you can expect and best probable answers.

Job interviews can be tricky, especially when it’s your first time or your prior experience was not so good. That is why it becomes important for a job seeker to prepare accordingly and do as much research as they can so they are not caught off guard. As part of the preparation, it is recommended that you acquaint yourself with interview questions to expect and their most probable responses.

Today we will take you through 5 questions you can expect in a Bank Clerk job interview. But before we do that, what do Bank Clerks do exactly, what are some of their daily tasks?

As a Bank Clerk, you will be expected to maintain and update banking records pertaining every action in your department, from cashing in cheques to loans disbanded, data entry, filing and related general tasks. And these can be grouped in various specialties such as Loan clerk, Security clerk, Bookkeeping clerk or Interest clerks among other clerical positions.

Questions & Answers in Bank Clerk Interview

1. Tell Me About Yourself
Like you would guess, this is one question you are probably not going to miss in any job interview. And like in other interviews, recruiters and employers use this question to know more about you by evaluation your skills, qualifications and motivation for the job. This then means that you need not mumble or fumble in your answer.

You could say, “My name is Clara Mwangi. I am a recent BCom graduate of ABC University, where I was active in the school’s student council Association. In my capacity as Treasurer, I’ve helped organize and manage various events. This helped me become comfortable at handling money, complaints and dealing with people of different personalities, which is a reason I believe makes me a great fit as a clerk in your bank.”

2. How do you handle irate customers?
As part of your job as a Bank Clerk, your daily tasks will entail interacting with customers and like it’s common, people are different in their personalities. Working in a bank, you will encounter customers from all walks of life; some kind and patient, others rude and impatient. Recruiters want to know how you would handle a difficult customer.

“Customers deserve respect, so I’d handle an unhappy customer by listening attentively to their concerns. Then I would evaluate the situation and based on the bank’s procedures and policies, work to come to a mutually beneficial understanding”

3. What do you know about the bank?
The recruiting manager will expect that the fact you have applied for a position as a bank clerk in that bank, you probably have do so in other banks as well. They will then want to know if you have done your background research on that particular bank or you are just another random applicant. Remember you are competing with other suitably qualified candidates, so be knowledgeable about the bank’s processes before the interview.

Your answer should center on interests for example when it comes to loans and savings, benefits of being the bank’s customer and any latest news you have heard about it.

4. How well do you handle multiple tasks?
Again, as a Bank Clerk you will find yourself handling different tasks at the same time. You will be dealing with a difficult customer, updating reports, talking on the phone with bank tellers and other staff and trying to follow up on different things at the same time. Are you good at multitasking? Does handling many tasks at once come easy to you or do you find it distracting?

An ideal answer, “I try much not to multitask as I have read that this may reduce productivity and instead prefer prioritizing on tasks. However, when I have no choice but to multitask, such as finalizing on a report while taking an important phone call, I’m capable of multitasking in this capacity. It only requires concentration.”

5. What salary are you expecting in this position?
Most jobs will always have this question towards the end of the interview, and when they don’t, you are advised to do the asking. You can read more about that here. While the question is more or less near pointless (open positions always have a set budget), recruiters will want to see how reasonable or well knowledgeable you are about the position. So you need to do your research, and to help you out, bank clerk jobs will start paying between 30 and 35K depending on the bank.

An answer would be, “Based on my qualifications and what I will bring on board, I am looking to earn between K’sh 30,000 to K’sh 35,000 and I would like to know if there are other benefits.”
